Around the 1960’s in America there became in our world a response to what was perceived as a slight by people who felt deeply. They were aware of the soul to some extent and felt bound by the culture of the time. If these people were united with the eternal there would have been no perception of lack. Think of the child who, while being overlooked by a cashier while he attempts to pay for a soda, begins to feel uncomfortable, small and slighted. He returns home and cries to his grandmother, bemoaning the fact that he stood patiently at the grocery store waiting to pay for his purchase while continually being overlooked by the cashier. The grandmother, having lived a life that matured into wisdom, assures the child that what he saw was a reflection of the cashier not him. It was she who did not see his beauty and worth not he who was not worthy. This model has not been prevalent in our recent past. There was no wisdom in the culture guiding us on. No one listening to the woes of the sensitive ones and THEN, after the woe had found expression, prodding them to look deeper. No one guiding them to their spirit … to eternity. No Merlin guiding Arthur. It was, using Jerry Mander’s book title “The Absence of the Sacred”. Of course the Sacred does not leave…it is in fact all that there is. But we can turn away from it. We have that choice. As this connection to our spirit, usually held and embodied by wise men and women fell away, generations drifted further from God.
Up rose one of the minor deities clothed in the “heart felt” expressions of self indulgence. Up rose greed. As greed gained godlike status in our culture the soul was not unscathed. With no foundation or understanding, no wise men to lead the souls toward spirit, greed infiltrated all of our bodies. Greed in the physical….yearning for things and wealth, prosperity and abundance. Greed of the soul…greed for personal expression and joy. Greed of the small “s” spirit… greed for knowledge, enlightenment, mantras, “righteousness”. Greed is greed…spiritual greed is no different than physical greed.
It is time to move, time to push. The call has gone out. We have a little bit of choice left…but I do no think much. This is, as Marianne Williamson said in her TED speech, “a self correcting world”. A world of Generating, Organizing and Destroying….a world of God. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John 1:1 If we continue to ignore this FACT we will be corrected. A culture or a nation simply cannot forget their maker…”the foundation on which it stands” and expect no consequence. Ask a tree how it would survive without its roots.
This is a realm of choice, consequence and relationship. If you don’t like it …go somewhere else next time, there are plenty of realms with different laws to choose from but this one has consequence and choice and this is where you are now. Think about it. How many of you believe in a creator but hesitate to say so out loud. How many of you believe in God yet are careful not to use the word for fear it will divide you from the people around you. What are you actually dividing yourself from. Oh yeah…God…Truth. And Truth is not politically correct it is Truth. Don’t confuse your soul, heart, emotion and perception of “evolved” spirituality with God. God is the mystery. The One that has no two. How about a “shout out” once in awhile. A “thank God”, a “there but for the Grace of God”, a “not my will but thine be done” Luke 22:42 or a simple moment of contemplation. Not a prayer for abundance or a mindless mantra but contemplation. And while you’re doing that remember that every word you have read here, every feeling you have felt, every thought you have thought arises as a piece of the One within the One and marvel…that is good place to begin.
