Do you ever wonder whether individuals and/or society have evolved over the ancients—or not. It certainly seems that the judgment of modern peoples asserts that this is the best of times, and ‘we are the people we have been waiting for.’ The feeling seems to be that they were ignorant and we are enlightened, and there is no doubt that we have better toys! But I still wonder—and as someone who likes to read the ancients, I just don’t see it.
And then I came across this story that I found in a little book I was reading, “The Nothing that Is; A Natural History of Zero”. After you read the quote below, you can decide!
“The story begins some 5,000 years ago with the Sumerians…When you read on one of their clay tablets, this exchange between father and son: ‘Where did you go?’ ‘Nowhere.’ ‘Then why are you late?’ You realize that 5,000 years are like an evening gone.”
